Pivot

A tileable, concrete organizer that encourages positive stress through a simple, restrictive outlet.

This chart illustrates a psychological concept that relates optimal performance to presence of mild, helpful stress. How can this be translated into a functional object for the home or workplace?

Formal inspiration for this project is driven by the terraces found in disparate examples of ancient architecture. The stability required to last as long as these structures is reflective of mental and creative stability.

Pivot blocks have limited function as individual pieces, but as more and more work together, they are able to accommodate more and larger objects.

As shown in sketch, each Pivot block is outfitted with cork feet on the bottom meant to protect surfaces from abrasion. Cork's natural origins and arbitrary patterning reflect the irregularities found in concrete.

Remember the Yerkes-Dodson Law from before? This demonstrates how Pivot works with that framework. In times of both creative underload and overload, Pivot can be used to to raise or lower stress levels.

In collaboration with graphic designer Claire Zehnal, we designed, developed and executed packaging that showcases the design and protects the product with shapes and cuts referencing the form of an individual Pivot tile.
