10 Day Week
An independent candle shop that operated on a different time scale.
The basic ideation sketches strayed from my typically more structured approach; these were used as an outlet to have fun imagining candles meant to convey “funny little guys.” Trying to maintain an air of relaxation and contemplation, however, I rejected any ideas leaning too “funny.”
The challenge of translating selected “funny little guys” into CAD without losing that “funny little” spirit proved worthwhile, producing a litany of simple but silly iterations from which 3D-printed positives could be made.
Analyzing contemporary design trends led to a palette of bold colors, initially limited to bright variations of primary colors and natural wax but later expanded to include a wide variety with greens, purples, and oranges.
These paired colors and fragrances were selected for an inital sale run; they roughly represent the four seasons as a nod to the utility found in the brand’s namesake: the French Republican Calendar. Since then, the line evolved to include a broader variety of scents (Warm Honey, Spiced Citrus, Pickled Veggies, etc.) matched with other bold colors inspired by trend analysis.
Rainbow
An arc-shaped candle that overflows with wax and positive attitude.
Triple
Three votives smashed together to burn at your own pace whether one at a time or all at once.
Flower
A pillar with seven petals that, when burnt, begin to wilt. They love me, they love me not.
Each of the dozens of sales were accompanied by a packing slip and necessary care guides with safe burning instructions, photos of what to expect, and each customer’s transaction information.
After initial success, I made more and more candles, experimented with different colors, scents, & techniques, and received fun pictures from those who purchased my work!
